“It is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been deeply buried.” Carl Rogers

This quote captures something fundamental about how I understand therapy. I believe that each of us already has a deep knowledge of our own experience, even when we have lost touch with it. While we may sometimes feel lost, stuck or disconnected from ourselves, meaningful change does not come from being told who we should be, how we should feel, or what we ought to do. Rather, it emerges through being deeply understood in relationship, and therapy can offer a space in which we begin to hear and trust ourselves more fully.

This is the philosophy at the heart of the Person-Centred Approach, developed by psychologist Carl Rogers and the approach I practise. Much of life involves being told who we should be, how we should feel, or what we ought to do. The Person-Centred Approach begins from a different place. It’s a relational and collaborative way of working together based on a profound trust in people’s capacity to make sense of their own lives. At times, that capacity can become obscured as we adapt to different experiences, relationships and circumstances over the course of our lives. Therapy can help us develop greater trust in our own experience and reconnect with our ability to find our own way forward.

Because what matters is how you experience your life, I believe it is important that you remain in control of the process. You decide what you would like to explore and the pace at which we work. Rather than directing or advising, my role is to accompany you with curiosity, care and respect, following what feels important for you as it unfolds in the session. My aim is to understand your experience from your perspective and to build a relationship in which you feel safe enough to express yourself.

I hope our work together will feel like a genuine collaboration - one that helps you make sense of difficult experiences, discover new insights and develop greater trust in yourself.
